My school runs 90-minute block classes, and let me tell you–running an SAT prep the last period of the day can. be. so. tough. First quarter I just plowed through strategies and practices sets and basically felt as miserable as the kids. This quarter I’m building in at least two brain break activities per class and it has done WONDERS for class morale and motivation. Here’s my four current favorites.
- Alternating Fingers and Thumbs (p.33/152). Break time: 2-3 minutes. The kids thought this would be a piece of cake but….it wasn’t. I timed them for a minute and they counted how many reps they could do. I have some hilarious pictures of their intensely concentrated faces .
- We’re Going on a Picnic. Break time: 5-10 minutes. You’ve probably played this as a kid during long car rides. Each person brings something to the picnic beginning with the next letter of the alphabet. Before you can bring something new, you have to remember what everyone before you is bringing. Continue all the way to Z.
- Zip-Zap-Zop. Break time: 5 minutes.
- Pick a Card. Break time: 5 minutes. Each card has a random question on it like, “If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you bring and why?” or “If you could have any superpower what would it be?” and I go through 3-5 each time.
